To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is about a rare 41-year-old young man who happens to be my nephew, Curtis A. Harris II.  Curtis is a single, very hard-working young man, who has tried very hard to make something of himself.  Curtis is a school dispatcher and Assistant Supervisor with the School Bus system for Los Angeles Unified School District for 23 years.  Curtis had perfect attendance until last April of 2007, when he took ill and we realized Curtis was in need of a kidney to continue his life.

Curtis has lost both of his parents and he stepped up to the plate and buried both of them…Curtis is a very wonderful young man and he is always willing to help others.  Also he does work with various community youth groups.  Curtis’ blood type is B positive.  He needs a living kidney donation transplant.  This will give him a much better chance of living longer, and having a healthier life.

The living organ donation gives better results for the recipient.  It eliminates the three- to five-year wait for a deceased-donor kidney and allows for the transplant surgery to be scheduled when both donor and the recipient are in for physical and emotional health.  The current Donor Roster reflects a wait  time between seven and ten years.

Curtis has been accepted into the UCLA Kidney Transplant Program in Los Angeles , CA .  There is no cost to you as the donor for required medical tests and surgery.  The Transplant Program does not cover transportation, lodging, lost wages or non-medical expenses.  Please contact your Human Resources Department or Personnel Department regarding the Donor Program policy for your company.  It is against Federal Law for a donor to be paid for his or donation.  We have also included an application from the UCLA Kidney Transplant Program to be filled out and returned to UCLA.

Physically, you should expect no long-term problems.  Although there are risks associated with any surgery, these are carefully reviewed with you.  The hospital stay is two (2) to four (4) days, and recovery takes about four (4) to six (6) weeks.  Some donors, however, may resume normal activities sooner.

If you need further help in answering your questions about Living Kidney Donation, please call the UCLA Kidney Transplant Program in Los Angeles , CA , for confidential telephone consultation at 1-866-672-5333.
